The Road Is Not Meant to Be Lonely

And let us consider how to stir up one another to love and good works, not neglecting to meet together, as is the habit of some, but encouraging one another, and all the more as you see the Day drawing near. (Hebrews 10:24-25)

I spend entirely too much time thinking of ways to “improve” the church.

What should we do to improve the children’s ministry?

How can we improve the music ministry? (No, I will continue to sing loud and off key.)

How do we improve our outreach?

The list goes on, overwhelming my ability to answer. It seems too complicated.

Ultimately, the answer is simple… fellowship. This is your annual summer reminder that just because the church programs have slowed down, that does not mean our call to fellowship takes a backseat. In fact, it becomes more critical that we focus on coming together because the infrastructure is less.

We see the scriptural reminders that “iron sharpens iron, and one man sharpens another” or to “bear one another’s burdens, and so fulfill the law of Christ” and dozens of other calls to fellowship. Allowing the Spirit to work through us and our church family is essential to Christian life. The road is not meant to be lonely, nor could we walk it alone.

So I encourage you to call the one recovering from illness. Get coffee with the one who recently lost a loved one. Have dinner with friends that you have not seen outside of worship in a month of Sundays. Our church will be strengthened, and in turn it will strengthen us.

Make the time for your brothers and sisters. It will grow our love for each other, for Christ, and His Church.

Your brother in Christ,

Thomas Goodrich
